Abstract:

Background: Water contamination of heavy metals is one of the major threats to human health and food chain. In this study, concentration of heavy metals of lead, chromium, copper and zinc in sediment was measured in order to assess their ecological effects and their risk. Methods: To determine the concentration of metals, 12 stations were selected along the river and 3 samples from the sediment were taken in each station. After the preparation and acid digestion of the samples, the concentration of these metals was determined using atomic absorption device. Results: The average total concentration of lead, copper, chromium and zinc metals in sediments was obtained in mg / kg (22.24±8.08). The results showed that the pollution load and ecological risk of heavy metals in the area are in lower risk category. The environmental hazard of metals was also evaluated (zinc lead). Also, by calculating the geochemical index of molars and contamination coefficient of Balkhloo sediments, the pollution of heavy metals was classified with zero degree of contamination and in non-contaminated area. Conclusion: Based on the results, the contamination and the ecological risk level of metals in the sediments of the region are evaluated at a low level.

Assessment of Ecological Hazard of Heavy Metals (Cr, Zn, Cu, Pb) in Surface Sediments of The Bashar River, Yasouj, Iran

Background & Aims of the Study: Heavy metals pollution in aquatic ecosystems threats living organisms' health and environment. Hence, the present study aims to assess concentration of lead, chromium, copper, zinc and their ecological risk in the surface sediments of the Bashar River during the summer and winter seasons. Materials & Methods: This is a field study; sampling of...

Evaluation of Soil Pollution with Heavy Metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni and V) in Ahvaz Parks (2016)

Background & objectives: Heavy metals in urban parks are one of the most important indicators of urban pollution, as children playing in the park can readily be affected. This research was conducted to evaluate the environmental pollution of some heavy metals in Ahvaz parks. Methods: To this end, 26 sampling stations were selected from 20 parks in Ahvaz city and the soil samples were analyzed b...

Assessment of heavy metals contamination in Mamut river sediments using sediment quality guidelines and geochemical indices.

This paper describes the concentration of selected heavy metals (Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the Mamut river sediments and evaluate the degree of contamination of the river polluted by a disused copper mine. Based on the analytical results, copper showed the highest concentration in most of the river samples. A comparison with Interim Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines (ICSQG) and Germany Sedi...

Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in Surface Sediment of the Darreh-Morad Beyg River

Background and Purpose: The heavy metal pollution and its fractionations in the surface sediments of Darreh-Morad Beyg River, Hamedan City were monitored for Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn in 2014.   Materials and Methods: Totally 30 surface sediment samples were taken from 10 stations with three replicates. The samples subjected to bulk digestion and chemical partitioning. The concentr...

Evaluation of Some Physiochemical Parameters and Heavy Metal Contamination in Hara Biosphere Reserve, Iran, Using a New Pollution Index Approach

Background: The pollution of the aquatic environment with heavy metals has become a worldwide problem during recent years, due to their potential toxic effects and ability to bio-accumulate in aquatic ecosystems. Heavy metals are sensitive indicators for monitoring changes in the aquatic environment. Methods: In this study, total concentrations of Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Fe were measured in water...
